Google Meet Gets Requested Update

Google has just announced an update to its Google Meet platform that includes in-meeting reactions, emoji-based feedback, the ability to meet inside of Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides, plus a picture-in-picture mode. Alongside these new features, there will now be client-side encryption within Meet, but this is still in beta. Users will have full control over the encryption keys and the identity provider to access those keys. Google intends to introduce end-to-end encryption for all meetings later in 2022, as currently all data is encrypted during transit.

Google Meet Platform Updates Features

Google’s direct of product management for Google Meet and Voice stated that these updates are focused around collaboration equity, meaning regardless of a user’s role, experience, language, location, or device, they can contribute to a team meeting. The update is also trying to ensure works in a physical space have the same experience to those working remotely by having personal video tiles for every meeting participant in a hybrid meeting, even for those already in a conference room with others.

Picture-in-picture mode is ideal for businesses that wish to stream webinars and similar meetings to YouTube, plus Google Meet’s new automatic noise cancellation is already available to users with Logitech, Asus, and Acer hardware. These updates will roll out in next month’s update.
